The Pura Meru

The Pura Meru is the largest Balinese temple of Lombok, lies in the city of Cakranegara and is the most important religious place in West Nusa Tenggara. It was built to the request of Anak Agung Made Karan in 1720. The three courts were built in the honor of the Hindu trinity, Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. The inner courtyard has three pagoda-like towers lined up from north to south. The northern Vishnu shrine has a nine level roof, the middle Siva has an eleven level roof and the southern Brahma has a seven level roof.

The Pura Lingsar sanctuary

The Pura Lingsar is one of the top religious places in West Nusa Tenggara and probably the only Hindu shrine in the world where Hindus and Muslims pray together. It was raised in 1714 at 7 km from West Narmada. In 1878 it was rebuilt in order to trasmit the harmony between the Balinese Hindu and the Muslim Sasak people and especially those who are the followers of the Wektu Teluk Islamic teachings of Lombok. The Bali temple lies higher, but it is behind the Muslim part. In the lower court is a well, where the Hindu and Muslim pilgrims at certain times fight symbolically by throwing rice cakes to each other.

The Temple of Pura Agung Gunung Sari

The Temple of Pura Agung Gunung Sari on the Sari Hill at 4 km from Mataram was the site of the infamous Battle of Puputan in the 22nd of Novmeber in 1894. The troops of the last Balinese ruler of Lombok, Anak Agung Nengah, fought with the Dutch troops led by general Van der Vetter.

The Narmada Park

The Narmada Park is a famous religious place is West Nusa Tenggara. It lies at 22 to the north from Mataram and was built in 1727 by Anak Agung Gede Ngurah, the King of Karang Asem. The garden of delights is at the same time a shrine built in the honor of Shiva. Its large pool it is believed to be the representation of the Rinjani crater lake, the Segara Anakan.
