The Third Largest City: Bandung

The capital city of West Java is Bandung and it is third largest in size after Jakarta and Surabaya in Indonesia. So called ‘Paris of Java’ by the Dutch, this city has a unique atmosphere like in the colonial times. The other nickname is Kota Kembang that means the Flower City as they used to have a lot of flowers.

Lush and Beautiful

Bandung is on the altitude of 768 meters and has lush and beautiful Parahyangan mountains surroundings. And such an altitude means it has a mild and very pleasant climate. Most people know this city for its universities and its gastronomic adventure. If you are there on a national holidays, you can be sure to meet a lot of their locals from Jakarta. One of the main places to see the the former Grote Postweg called ‘Jalan Asia-Afrika’ which connects the city square (alun-alun) with many of the city’s colonial landmarks.

Angkot, Angkutan Kota

One of the local Bandung’s transportation is the Angkot. Hail it like a taxi. It’s an experience to take a ride in one of these Angkot which means ‘city transport‘. You only see the origin and destination names, but this city transport is one of the cheapest in Indonesia. In various colours: red, pink, green, yellow and blue, sometimes even in unmatching colour, these minivan public transportation has only a single entry and exit door. Sometimes you enter on the back and sometimes the door is on its left. Facing sideways and facing each other, you sit on a long seat, one van can hold about 12 Asian physique passengers. So you tell the driver where you wish to stop. If you say ‘KIRI’ you mean ‘stop here’ or ‘left’. The other characteristic of the Angkot is that it has no fixed fare as they charge by how far you wish to travel. So, it is best to ask the driver or the assistant driver about the fare by telling him your destination.

The are some interesting places to see, such as the Bosscha ObservatoriumSaung Angklung Udjo and Geological Museum. There is also the  Sri Baduga Museum where it is right before Bandung Lautan Api, and Mandala Wangsit Siliwangi Museum. You are recommended to see the And if you are looking to do some activities in Bandung, you can walk and watch the teenagers and youngsters who are hanging around at Jalan Dago on a Saturday night.
