The barren landscape characteristic to East and South-East Nusa Tenggara was formed as the result of the hot and dry winds coming from the Australian continent. There are some beaches where doesn’t not rain in the most part of the year.

Flores is a Portuguese origin name, meaning flower that is a reference to the beautify of the island. This island is long stretching between Sumbawa and Timor is filled with volcanoes and mountains, which divides the area in many different regions. These regions have their own languages ​​and traditions.

Kelimutu

The Kelimutu is the most visited natural wonder of East Nusa Tenggara. From the mountain top at 66 km from Ende and 83 km from Maumere you can see Indonesia’s most mysterious and dramatic panorama. The three crater lakes of different colors are not only a tourist attraction, but the source of myths and legends. Over the years, the lakes constantly changed their color. Today the largest lake is clear turquoise, the second is oil green and the third black. The locals believe that after death the soul of the young people goes to the first one, the soul of the elderly people goes to the second one and the soul of the thieves and murderers goes to the third, black lake.

Komodo Island

The Komodo Island is located on the area of ​​only 280 km2 between Sumbawa and Flores. Its notable tourist attraction is the giant lizard, which lives only on this island in its natural environment. The locals called the komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) Ora, which is basically a giant lizard. Its length can reach the three or four meters.  The island has one small fishing village called Komodo, where the locals breed goats, which then are used to fed their lizards. The Komodo dragon is a protected animal, and although it is harmless, it is advised to keep a distance from it. On the area of the natura reserve also live many species of birds, deers, wild boars, the latters often fall prey to the dragon. The island can be reached by boar from Labuanbajo.

Nemberela coast

The Nemberela coast is the most beautiful coastline of the province, is one of the most important attractions of East nusa Tenggara and it is an ideal surfing location. From June to October, sportsmen come here from all over the world to try out the storm surf on the southwestern coast of the Rote Island.

Labuanbajo

Labuanbajo is a small fishing town on the western tip of Flores, this is the starting point of the Komodo boat trips. It is an excellent location for water skiing, windsurfing, fishing and other marine recreational activities.
