The province of Gorontalo is mostly mountainous, the mountain ranges are streching in the north-south direction. The landscape is stunning, the area is the habitat of various rare species of animals and trees.

The forests of Nani Wartabone and Nantu are famous tourist sites, they have a protected fauna and flora. The babirusa (Babyrousa celebensis, a sort of boar), the anoa (anoa, dwarf water buffalo), the Tarsier (Tarsius spectrums) and the hammerhead hens (macrocephala male) can be found in both of the forests.

Castles in Gorontalo

The Otanaha castle was the fort of the Kings of Gorontalo. They used a special mixture of building materials in the construction including sand, mortar and the egg white of the hammer -headed hen. The castle is lying ona hilltop at the border of the Dembo village, therefor it has a beautiful view of the Limboto Lake. The castle is located at 8 km from the city center of Gorontalo. There are also two other castles in the area: Otahiya and Ulupahu. To visit the three castles the visitors need to take 345 steps, but there is an alternative route to the castles as well.

The Nani Wartabone monument

A Nani Wartabone monument is the memorial of a hero of Gorontalo, who played an important role in winning the independence of the region. His statue stands in the middle of the Taruna Rema Gorontalo Park.

The Tower of Majesty

The Tower of Majesty in Gorontalo is 60 meters high, and with the telescopes located at the top of it you can discover the beauties of the Limboto Lake. The building awaits its visitors with a memorial exhibition and restaurants.

The Ju Panggola Graveyard

The Ju Panggola Graveyard was built in the 14th century and lies near the village of Dembe 1, at 8 km from Kota Barat of Gorontalo. The people of the area consider the cemetery a sacred place because of the unique characteristics associated with the Islamic culture. It is no coincidence that many visitors of the cemetery meditate there for a long time.

Mesjid Hunto

Mesjid Hunto is the mosque of Sultan Amaiand is one of the oldest mosques in the province. It was built 300 years ago and lies in the Siendeng district of the city. The well and the Bedu (traditional Islam drum) inside of it, have the same age as the mosque.

Traditional occupations

The population of the bajo villages (Tilamuta, Torosiaje, Popayato) population still lives in a block keeping its specific culture and customs. They are mainly engaged in fishing, they spend most of their time on the board of their vessels.

Karawo is the center of the the kerawang (traditional cloth) handicraft in Gorontalo.

The Rumah Adat Gorontalo

The Rumah Adat Gorontalo (Bantayo Poboide) is part of the cultural heritage of Gorontalo. It is a traditional house, which lies in the Limboto district of Gorontalo. The word bantayo means building and the world poboide means meeting space. The Bantayo Poboide is the culture symbol of Gorontalo, and the center of artistic and cultural life of the city as well. All rooms have separate functions, and the ornaments of the building symbolize different parts of Gorontalo,
presenting the typical everyday activities of the population of Gorontalo
